Math Genius -- "At 15, Westinghouse Finalist Grasps 'Holy Grail' of Math" -- Aleksandr Khazanov, 15, was featured in this front page New York Times article as one of the 40 finalists of this year's Westinghouse Science Talent Search. Basically put, "Aleksandr's paper demonstrated when solutions in matrices were possible to the last theorem of Pierre de Fermat ..." (this equation was proved by a Princeton mathematician last year.) Mr. Teitel, a teacher at Stuyvesant, went as far as calling Westinghouse up and questioning whether they have someone advanced enough to understand his paper. Karen Royden, the director of youth programs at Science Service, which administers the Westinghouse, agrees and thinks "he's a genius." Last summer, Aleksandr was a member of the U.S. Math Olympiad team that captured the gold medal in Hong Kong. According to the Times article, he has applied to the Ph.D program at Penn State.
